How come my facebook contacts wont sync to my new iphone?

i just bought my iphone 3gs and i am trying to sync my facebook contacts to my iphone phonebook but it wont work… i have the facebook app and i keep pressing “On” for Syncing… but it wont work
im not trying to pay for any apps
